Kim Clijsters capped a remarkable comeback from a two-year layoff to win the United States Open over Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark on Sunday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium.




　　

　　The unseeded Clijsters, the 2005 United States Open champion and a former world No. 1 from Belgium, had retired in 2007 because of injuries and a desire to start a family. On Sunday night, Clijsters, now with an 18-month-old daughter, Jada, in attendance照料, reclaimed the Open title with a 7-5, 6-3 victory.

　　

　　

　　Her victory — achieved in just her third tournament back on the women’s tour — will be remembered as much if not more for the bizarre fashion she reached the final as for her return to form at age 26. On Saturday night, she beat Serena Williams, 6-4, 7-5, after Williams contested a double-fault and earned a point penalty for berating the lineswoman on match point. Clijsters, a bystander in the whole incident, could only shake hands with Williams once the match was declared over.

　　

　　

　　Her trip through the Open draw was also a difficult one, with victories over 14th-seeded Marion Bartoli, Kirsten Flipkens, third-seeded Venus Williams, 18th-seeded Li Na, second-seeded Serena Williams and then the ninth-seeded Wozniacki.

　　

　　

　　

　　On Sunday, Clijsters faced a competitive first set, but had little trouble throwing Wozniacki, 19, off her plan and put the game far out of balance一边倒. Clijsters had a remarkable 36 winning shots to Wozniacki’s 10. By the final game, the result seemed inevitable. Wozniacki was barely able to muster a lobbed return shot, and, with one final smash, Clijsters announced her return to the top of the women’s tour.
