[00:03.49]yellow brick building in a residential section in the heart of Washington,
[00:07.20]D.C. reads “La Clinica del Pueblo” -the People’s Clinic.
[00:12.10]The founder and director of this clinic, Doctor Juan Romagoza,
[00:16.09]came to the United States from El Salvador twenty years ago,
[00:19.08]fleeing torture and persecution in his native country.
[00:22.57]His story and his clinic in today’s edition of New American Voices.
[00:27.07]La Clinica del Pueblo treats about six thousand patients each year,
[00:31.36]the vast majority of them immigrants from Latin America
[00:34.27]who have low-paying jobs and no health insurance.
[00:37.58]“Their needs stem from chronic problems --diabetes,
[00:40.90]hypertension, asthma, arthritis,cancer,
[00:47.02]AIDs are the most common medical problems.
[00:50.15]Also teen pregnancy, sexually transmitted diseases in teens.
[00:54.36]And emotional problems,
[00:56.23]the effects of the trauma of civil war are frequent in this community.
[00:59.65]Domestic violence and alcoholism … many people come through
[01:03.36]these doors with that problem.”
[01:05.38]Although Doctor Romagoza speaks English,
[01:07.79]he prefers to talk about his work and his personal experiences in Spanish.
[01:11.89]A compact, energetic man in his fifties, he directs a staff of forty-six,
[01:16.90]plus one hundred volunteers, in providing basic health services,
[01:21.00]health education,and counseling
[01:23.30]to the more than 500 people who visit his clinic each week.
[01:27.01]“We provide a series of medical services integrated
[01:28.99]into a concept of holistic health,
[01:34.50]in which we incorporate not just the physical aspects of medicine
[01:34.57]with specialists but also the emotional and mental health dimensions
[01:39.00]and the social aspects.
[01:40.40]We have very interesting, innovative clinics that deal with AIDs,
[01:44.80]prenatal care, diabetes, a very popular clinic involving alternative therapies.
[01:50.30]We offer help in translation also,
[01:52.54]both in our clinic and for our clients in other hospitals
[01:56.03]and clinics where they need interpreters.”
[01:58.40]La Clinica del Pueblo’s services are free.
[02:01.32]Dr. Romagoza says the 4 million dollar annual operating budget
[02:05.32]is covered by the city, the federal government,
[02:08.23]and donations from foundations and private individuals.
[02:11.54]To help with costs,
[02:13.16]the Clinic tries to match up needy patients with services
[02:13.24]that the city already provides to low-income individuals
[02:16.33]–- such as food stamps or HIV testing
[02:18.96]-- but which the Latino immigrants might not know about.
[02:21.88]La Clinica’s health workers also go out into the community.
[02:28.28]”In view of the fact that we don’t have much space,
[02:31.09]we try to go where people live,
[02:33.40]to their neighborhoods and churches, to talk to them,
[02:36.02]and make sure that they know where to find us when they are sick.
[02:40.78]And we have educational programs in the evenings in strategic locations,
[02:44.77]where Latinos gather,
[02:46.28]trying to warn them and teach them about the symptoms of AIDS.
[02:50.60]Also we have what we call nutrition Saturdays and health Sundays,
[02:54.82]teaching people about better nutrition and preventive health care.
[02:58.24]We go to the churches to try to educate people to do routine examinations.
[03:02.56]And we strive for early detection
[03:04.97]of the problems most frequently present in our clients,
[03:08.17]and if it’s too late we refer them to the right place for follow-up treatment.”
[03:12.78]Juan Romagoza opened La Clinica del Pueblo in 1983,
[03:16.88]not long after coming to the United States seeking asylum.
[03:20.38]Like so many other Salvadoreans,
[03:22.39]he had fled the violence of the country’s civil war.
[03:22.47]As a young doctor practicing medicine among the poor of San Salvador,
[03:26.18]he had been suspected of being a guerilla leader, and was arrested and tortured.
