Comment on Songs of Ascending YouZhou Tower

   Among the poems of Chen Zi"ang-a famous ancient Chinese poet, the most popularly recited one should be this small poem which contains only twenty-two characters, the success of which is not accidental.

   The title of the poem is "Songs of Ascending You Zhou Tower", however, in the whole poem, there is not any word used to write about climbing or describe the scenery of You Zhou.Moreover, there is even not the commonly mentioned landscape one views when looking into the distance from a high place . But we cannot say that the author mistook the title. In this poem, the poet has transferred the boundless vision when ascending JiBei Tower from space conception to time conception. Therefore, though the scenery that appeared before the poet may be spacious sky and limitless wild land, what he could feel and write was the long history and the eternal universe. In The Excursion ,which is adapted from Poetry of the Chu, we can find such sentence:"The heaven and earth is vast, but human life is full of hardships.Neither can I catch up with the past talents, nor can I know about people in the future."It seems that the poem by chen Zi"ang comes from this one.As a matter of fact, the borrowing meaning is just used to express the author"s feeling in his own times.

   In the reform of Tang Poetry, chen Zi"ang was a poet who continued with the past and opened up the future with historic mission. In the practice of his exploration of the institutional design and category of discipline of Tang Poetry, he tried his best to oppose to the customs left in Kingdom Qi and Liang and believed what he did was correct. But the enormous trend had not formed. So he regretted that he couldn"t make friends with the former talents such as the famous people in Jian An  period Of Han Dynasty. Actually, he also hated the fact that there was little bosom friend. Xin Qiji---the classical Chinese poet in Southern Song Dynasty said:"I don"t hate that I cannot see the ancient people but hate that the ancient genius couldn"t see my wisdom. Only a few people know me."This example is using the opposite meaning to show the author"s intention.chen Zi"ang also believed that there was definitely wise talent that could continue his career after him.His only regret was that life is short and he couldn"t see the future. Thus on thinking of the eternity of the universe, he had the solitary and sorrowful feeling. The general tone of the poem is fervent and desolate, but it is not depressed or pessimistic. The songs from You Zhou Tower got immense echo. When it came to the prosperous Tang Dynasty which .produced many famous poets such as Li Bai, Wang Wei, Cen Shen, Wang Changlin and Dou Fu, the golden period of Tang Dynasty appeared.

  Of course, the above situation is only our association of the idea chen Zi"ang may have, judging from the position he stayed at and the function he performed in the development of Tang Poetry. Because this suits his conceitedness for his outstanding accomplishment in literature.There is once such a story in historic biography: When chen Zi"ang went to ancient Beijing city for the first time, he was not well known. One day, a person selling huqin--a general term for certain two stringed bowed instruments asked for about one million yuan for this instrument.People around didn"t know why it was so expensive.Zi"ang walked out of the crowd, underbought it and claimed that he was good at playing instrument and would like the crowd to watch his performance. People came as he had expected. This time, Zi"ang spoke by touching the instrument:"I"m Chen Zi"ang from Shu and have hundreds of reels of literary works. When I rushed through the whole city, they were covered with dust and nobody knew them. This instrument is of bad quality and we should never care about it!" Soon he crushed it and sent all his works to people around.Throughout the day, he became renowned.From this, we know that he is arrogant about his talent in literary works. Even so, the connotation of this poem is not limited in the dream of himself. Some people said that in the year 696--the first year of Tong Tian--when the Chinese emperor Wu Zetian ruled China, chen Zi"ang was in the position of staff officer served in Wu Youyi"s military camp. At that time, he was sent to the front. Because of the failure in military battle, he was banished. On the moment of his grief and indignation, he ascended the south Ji Tower and wrote this poem. If it was true, then there is a sense of frustration in the poet who wanted to become a capable politician.
