Painkiller magazine celebrates 10 years in business with imported metalheads
Love it or hate it, heavy metal is a musical force to be reckoned with in China. How else can you explain the enduring popularity of genres that have long since died out elsewhere (hello, rap metal!) or the fact that domestic headbangers still draw way bigger festival crowds than whatever pansy international indie acts turn up on our stages?
At the forefront of the Chinese metal scene for the past decade has been Painkiller magazine, documenting local heavyweights such as Yaksa, Overload and Suffocated, alongside foreign princes of darkness. And to celebrate ten years, the mag is bringing three foreign acts with appropriately make-your-motherblush names to Mao Livehouse.
From the US, Exodus (Thursday 23 September) have been grinding out thrash metal for almost 30 years. Metalcore five-piece Heaven Shall Burn (pictured; Friday 3 September) come from Weimar, Germany. And Dying Fetus (Wednesday 22 September) offer up American death metal. We have a word with each act before their visits.
Why do you want to come and play in China?
Maik Weichert, Heaven Shall Burn: We want to play for our fans worldwide and see new countries. We’re also from the former East Germany, so our countries were closely connected in the past, and we always learned about China and its amazing history.
What’s the most metal thing you’ve ever done?
Gary Holt, Exodus: That’s a hard question, because there’s been a lot of metal in all these years! But I have seen some pretty spectacular injuries at some of our shows!
Weichert: Our band comes from a town in Germany where we have one of the biggest steelworks in Europe. That is enough metal, I guess, ha ha!
Sean Beasley, Dying Fetus: It is a strange question considering we do a lot of shows, but that would have to be it: touring constantly and playing all these shows seems metal.
What’s the most metal thing a fan has ever done?
Holt: I had a fan bring me a dead cat he found, which was pretty sick! I wasn’t too happy about that gift!
What do you hope Chinese audiences get out of your show?
Holt: I’m very much looking forward to meeting some new fans and bringing the Exodus attack to them! A broken nose and a black eye! And a good time!
Beasley: Just to see us live and experience the brutal live show that we have had the privilege of playing to other crowds around the world.
