The Inner Mongolian folk musician releases Sunrise

Inner Mongolia native Gangzi releases a self-produced EP, Sunrise. ‘Undeniably, I’m proud to be Mongolian,’ says Gangzi. ‘I feel I have the obligation to do more for my ethnic group, so I feel that preserving folk music is very important.’

It’s music he’s been steeped in since he was a child. ‘Whenever there was a family reunion, everyone would have to perform something. It’s a tradition for Mongolians to dance and sing in front of the family,’ Gangzi recalls. ‘When I was groping for my own music, I finally found something that diverges from the traditional way of performing our music. I could actually play a guitar and sing the traditional Mongolian songs at the same time."
